Abdominal aortic calcifications predict survival in peritoneal dialysis patients
Peritoneal Dialysis International Sep 13, 2018
Mäkelä S, et al. - In this prospective, observational, multicenter study, researchers determined the predictive value of abdominal aortic calcification severity and peripheral arterial disease on outcome of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients using approaches that are easily available in everyday practice. They analyzed 249 PD patients (mean age 61 years, 67% male) from 2009 to 2013 and assessed their abdominal aortic calcification score (AACS) using lateral lumbar X-ray, and the ankle-brachial index (ABI) using a Doppler device. Findings support the strong prognostic value of severe aortic calcification for all-cause mortality in PD patients. Aortic calcifications evaluated via lateral X-ray is a simple method that helps to identify high-risk patients.
