Abdominal aortic calcification score predicts the occurrence of coronary artery disease in middle-aged peritoneal dialysis patients
Nephrology Jul 02, 2018
Chen HC, et al. - In middle-aged peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, the researchers evaluated the value of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) score in the estimation of coronary artery disease (CAD) occurrence. For this investigation, they enrolled middle-aged (45-65 years old) PD patients and followed up until CAD occurrence, patient mortality, or PD failure. A total of 187 patients were selected for this research. Study results suggested that AAC score could predict CAD occurrence in PD patients. In patients with CAD during follow-up, AAC score was higher vs patients without CAD, and patients with an AAC score above 5.5 had significantly higher cumulative incidence of CAD vs patients with an AAC score below 5.5. Main factors correlated with higher AAC score were age, diabetes, hypertension, dialysis vintage, and low serum potassium level.
