A systematic review and meta-analysis of lymphovascular invasion in patients treated with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer
Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations May 08, 2018
Mari A, et al. - Researchers analyzed literature data on the prognostic value of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in radical cystectomy (RC) specimens. This analysis included 65 studies (including 78,107 patients) assessing the impact of LVI on oncologic outcomes in patients treated with RC for bladder cancer (BC). Irrespective of tumor stage and node status (pT1–4 pN0–2), LVI was found to be related to disease recurrence and cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in all studies. Overall, LVI was shown to be a strong prognostic factor of worse prognosis. This link was found to be strongest in node-negative BC, but it was also in node-positive BC. The inclusion of LVI as a component of all pathological reporting was recommended. LVI could provide additional information for treatment-decision making regarding adjuvant therapy after RC.
