A school‐based eating disorder prevention program (Me, You & Us) for young adolescents in Korea: A 3‐year follow‐up study

International Journal of Eating Disorders Feb 13, 2021

Kwag KH, Han SW, Cho JY, et al. - In Korea, researchers conducted the study for analyzing the feasibility and long‐term impacts of a school‐based eating disorder prevention program for young adolescents. They followed up with the students (n = 133) who took part in the prevention program 3 years before to assess changes in body esteem and self‐esteem between postintervention and the follow‐up, examining if gender moderated the effect of time. There was no decline in body esteem and self‐esteem from postintervention to 3‐year follow‐up seen in boys, though girls showed decreases in body esteem and self‐esteem from postintervention to 3‐years follow‐up. This research presents evidence supporting the efficacy of the school‐based eating disorder prevention program targeting mixed‐sex, young adolescents in Korea. The program may be successful for boys over time, given the developmental trajectories of reduction in body esteem and self-esteem during adolescence. Gender-wide boosters and/or complementary prevention strategies are required.
