A retrospective analysis of referral patterns to a university oral medicine clinic

Friesen R, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective patient chart review on all oral medicine (OM) specialists at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) over a 1-year period in order to assess the referral patterns to a university-based OM clinic. In addition, they sought for the access issues to OM care. They included 924 patients were included. Referral in 81.4% of cases was made by dentists, with the remaining cases referred by physicians. The most common referral reason (38%) was white/red lesions, with the tongue (21.8%) being the most common site of concern. The accuracy of provisional diagnoses did not differ significantly between clinician types. In the study population, wait times and travel distances were identified compromising the access to care.
