A preliminary study of the effect of early aerobic exercise treatment for sport-related concussion in males
Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine Sep 05, 2019
Leddy JJ, et al. - Via a quasi-experimental design, experts investigated the impact of early prescribed aerobic exercise vs relative rest on rate of recovery in male adolescents acutely following sport-related concussion (SRC). In the exercise group (EG, n = 24), the recovery time from the initial visit was significantly shorter. Mixed-effects linear models exhibited that all symptom clusters reduced with time and that there was no important interaction between treatment group and time. No EG individuals experienced prolonged recovery (> 30 days), whereas 13% (4/30) of rest group (n = 30) individuals experienced prolonged recovery. Thus, these preliminary data imply that early subthreshold aerobic exercise prescribed to symptomatic adolescent males within 1 week of SRC accelerates recovery and has the potential to limit postponed recovery.
