A potential diagnostic pitfall for hobnail variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma

Wong KS, Chen TY, Higgins SE, et al. - Researchers analyzed three cohorts to compare the histopathologic features and clinical outcome of "hobnail-like” classic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and true hobnail variant of PTC. They found that classic PTC may exhibit ischemic/degenerative atypia that imitates the hobnail cytomorphology of the true hobnail variant. Nevertheless, these tumors lack aggressive histopathologic traits and continue a slow clinical field.
