A pilot study evaluating the efficacy and safety of retinaldehyde-loaded niosomes against mild-to-moderate acne

Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Oct 05, 2021

Kim J, Kim J, Suk J, et al. - The results indicate that the retinaldehyde-loaded niosome (RA-N) nanoemulsion was successful in treating comedones in acne-prone skin and was safe for long-term use.

  • Twenty-three patients with mild-to-moderate acne and both closed and open comedones were included in the study.

  • After 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, the individuals had significantly less closed and open comedones than at baseline.

  • The mean sebum secretion, as measured by Sebumeter, was 327.95 ± 90.20 μg cm −2 at baseline and decreased to 282.60 ± 99.70 and 250.65 ± 97.6 μg cm −2 after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, respectively.

  • The mean desquamation index, as assessed by Visioscan, was 10.99 ± 1.69 at baseline and fell to 9.81 ± 1.10 and 8.89 ± 1.32 after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, respectively.

  • The administration of the RA-N nanoemulsion resulted in a much lower amount of desquamation, indicating that the RA-N nanoemulsion was well-tolerated and did not cause skin irritation.

  • During this trial, none of the individuals experienced a significant adverse event.
