A novel approach to optimize vitamin D intake in Belgium through fortification based on representative food consumption data
The Journal of Nutrition Jun 20, 2019
Moyersoen I, et al. - Using food consumption data from the Belgian Food Consumption Survey 2014 (n=3,200; age 3–64 years), researchers developed and applied a model to optimize vitamin D intake through food fortification in the Belgian population. Specifically, the investigators created and applied a model that simultaneously selected the optimal combination of food vehicles and defined the optimal fortification level that adequately increases vitamin D intake in the population without compromising safety. Overall, 63 combinations of 6 potential vehicles for food fortification were included in the optimization model. Within the Belgian population, the prevalence of inadequate vitamin D consumption was significantly attenuated by multiple combinations of food vehicles (from 92%-96% to < 2%). Using the optimization model, an effective fortification scenario—defined as the fortification of “milk and milk beverages” and “bread” with 6.9 μg vitamin D/100 kcal—was identified to improve vitamin D consumption within the Belgian population, based on acceptable risks of inadequate and excessive intake. According to the investigators, the model may be applicable to other micronutrients and populations.
