New England Journal of Medicine Jun 04, 2019
Wang ZD, et al. - in China, surveillance for tickborne diseases led to a patient who presented to a hospital in Inner Mongolia with a febrile illness that had an unknown cause in 2017, researchers conducted this investigation to determine if there is an association between new segmented virus and human febrile illness in China. Investigators found a previously unknown segmented RNA virus, which they designated Alongshan virus and which belongs to the family Flaviviridae jingmenvirus group, was the cause of the infection in the index patient. The data presented in this work showed a newly discovered segmented virus in northeastern China has been found to be associated with a febrile illness, which was confirmed in 86 patients from Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang by RT-PCR assay in those presenting with fever, headache, and a history of tick bites.
