A multilocus genetic risk score is associated with arterial stiffness in hypertensive patients: The CARE NORTH study

Journal of Hypertension Sep 13, 2018

Polonis K, et al. - Among 730 participants in the CARE NORTH study, researchers investigated the possible association of a multilocus genetic risk score (GRS), comprised of selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to cardiovascular traits and outcomes, with arterial stiffness in patients with hypertension. Carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) was measured to assess the arterial stiffness. Using an unadjusted and adjusted model, they tested the link between a constructed GRS and cfPWV. They observed an increased arterial stiffness in relation to the GRS composed of 13 SNPs associated with cardiovascular phenotypes in hypertensive patients. These results could assist in clarifying the genetic basis of arterial stiffening and offer insight into mechanisms underlying this phenotype.
