A multicentre retrospective clinico-histopathological review of 250 patients after parotidectomy

International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Aug 03, 2019

Croonenborghs TM, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed and subsequently compared the clinico-histopathological evaluation of all parotid tumours, of both epithelial and non-parenchymal origin, treated in the Department of Oral of Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospitals Leuven over a 10-year period and at ETZ Hospitals in Tilburg over a 5-year period, as well as evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). The study sample consisted of 250 consecutive patients treated surgically for parotid gland-related tumours. The most prevalent type of parotid tumour in this study was pleomorphic adenoma. Overall, FNAC's sensitivity and specificity was 64% and 99%, respectively. Although facial nerve palsy is quite common, there are few current treatment options. In order to adapt surgical planning, preoperative diagnostic work using imaging and ultrasound-guided FNAC was crucial in detecting malignancy. Therefore, when considering malignancy, FNAC is an essential diagnostic tool and ultrasound guidance is essential to enhance sensitivity.
