A model for predicting bacteremia in patients with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia: A retrospective observational study
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Feb 18, 2018
Washio Y, et al. - Risk factors for bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia were determined. Additionally, researchers wished to construct a prediction model for the development of bacteremia in patients with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia. In patients with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia, the factors that independently conferred risk for the development of bacteremia included age < 65 years, hypoalbuminemia, intensive respiratory or vasopressor support, and high C-reactive protein level on admission. Among such patient population, those at high risk of developing bacteremia could be detected with the help of a prediction model based on these four risk factors; this could be used to guide antibiotic choices.
