A meta-analysis of the prevalence of different functions of non-suicidal self-injury

Journal of Affective Disorders Evidence based | Dec 06, 2017

Taylor PJ, et al. - The meta-analysis was conducted to examine the prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions in the community and clinical samples. The researchers revealed that intrapersonal functions of NSSI were most common and were present for the majority of participants. This finding supported dominant emotion-regulation models of NSSI, and the use of interventions that work to improve emotion-regulation ability. Interpersonal functions, however, remained endorsed by a substantial portion of participants.
