A meta-analysis of 46 studies identified by the FDA demonstrates that soy protein decreases circulating LDL and total cholesterol concentrations in adults
The Journal of Nutrition Apr 25, 2019
Mejia SB, et al. - Because the FDA is considering revoking the heart-health claim for soy protein due to a perceived lack of consistent reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in randomized, controlled trials, researchers conducted a meta-analysis that included adult men and women from 46 trials that the FDA will use to make its decision regarding revocation of the heart-health claim for soy protein. Participants had baseline circulating LDL-C levels ranging from 110 to 201 mg/dL. According to findings, in adults, soy protein significantly reduced LDL-C levels by about 3% to 4%. These data, thus, supported the international advice given to the general public to increase the intake of plant protein.
