A longitudinal study on the relationship between dental health and metabolic syndrome in Japan
Journal of Periodontology Jul 28, 2019
Sakurai SI, et al. - Using a longitudinal analysis, researchers examined the associations between periodontal conditions and internal changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. For this investigation, 390 people who had medical and dental checkups in 2014 and 2016 were included and reviewed. Investigators discovered that the positive number of MetS components decreased in 62 people and raised in 104 cases. Sex, alcohol intake and glycemic mediation were identified as significant influencing factors for MetS by multivariate analysis. In individuals with persistent or progressive periodontitis, the number of MetS components was higher than in those with no/improved periodontitis. Periodontitis improvements had a substantial beneficial effect on components of MetS, including hypertension and hyperglycemia, but an adverse effect on hypertension.
