A longitudinal study on the relationship between dental health and metabolic syndrome in Japan
Journal of Periodontology Apr 01, 2019
Sakurai SI, et al. - Authors investigated 390 participants who underwent medical and dental check-ups in 2014 and 2016 and were included to study the associations between periodontal conditions and internal changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. They observed a decrease in the positive number of MetS components in 62 candidates whereas an increase was seen in 104 cases. They noted gender, alcohol intake, and the mediation of glycemia as significant determining factors for MetS in a multivariate analysis. In those with persistent or progressive periodontitis vs those with no/improved periodontitis, a higher number of MetS components was reported. They recorded a negative impact of improvements in periodontitis on hypertension. A positive impact of improvements in periodontitis was noted on MetS components.
