A highly-sensitive rapid test for the diagnosis of streptococcal pharyngitis: BD Veritor System

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Mar 11, 2020

Bulut ME, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the effectiveness of the BD Veritor System (USA) rapid antigen assay in identifying Group A Streptococcus (GAS) in throat swab samples. In total, 12,391 throat swabs were analyzed, taken with a double swab. GAS antigen detection was carried out using the BD Veritor System. Data reported that throat culture yielded positive for 18.5% whereas 19.1% were positive with rapid antigen tests (RAT). BD Veritor System's sensitivity was calculated as 94.1% and specificity as 97.9%, while positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy were determined as 91.0%, 98.7%, 97%, respectively. The rate of GAS positivity was 18.5% when all age groups were included and this ratio rose to 27.3% in the five-15 age group. The study which was performed with quite a large number of patients, gave the BD Veritor System high sensitivity. When the RAT is negative the need for culture should not be ignored for pediatric patients.
