A double-blind, paralleled-arm, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial of the effectiveness of probiotics as an adjunct in periodontal care
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Sep 11, 2019
Pelekos G, et al. - In this double-blind, paralleled-arm, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, researchers assessed the clinical efficacy of the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). Probiotics L. reuteri or placebo lozenges have been randomly prescribed randomly for 28 days twice-daily use. All candidates underwent NSPT and clinical follow-up assessments on Day 90 and Day 180 were conducted. Data reported that the trial response rate was 69.5%. In the management of periodontitis, the adjunctive use of probiotics with NSPT did not exhibit any additional clinical efficacy compared with NSPT alone.
