A contemporary lower pole approach for complete staghorn calculi: Outcomes and efficacy

Blum KA, et al. - Experts reported their institutional experience using a prone lower pole (LP) access in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for patients with complete staghorn stones to challenge the traditional paradigm that staghorn stones are most effectively treated through a prone upper pole (UP) approach. Compared to prone UP access, prone LP access showed similar effectiveness with decreased morbidity in patients with complete staghorn calculi. They noted lower complication rates for LP access vs UP access.
