Garren BR, et al. - investigators analyzed 171 individuals to elaborate on the prescription of postoperative opioid and consumption trends, as well as storage and disposal patterns for specific pediatric urologic procedures. They noticed 3 most frequent pediatric urology procedures: Inguinal hernia repair, circumcision, and cystoscopy. Corresponding to an over-prescription rate of 64%, an average excess of 9.8 doses were prescribed across all procedures. They reported 41 cases who leftover the opioid medication 2 weeks after surgery. Thirteen subjects were given peri-operative counseling on relevant storage and disposal of opiates. They concluded a general over-prescription of postoperative opioids and poor perioperative opioid education in the pediatric urology people.
