Hall PS, et al. - In the Women's Health Initiative—which consisted of a cohort of parous postmenopausal women—researchers investigated the associations of pregnancy loss (PL) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (RFs) and biomarkers. Researchers also determined the impact of the association between PL and CVD RFs on the link between PL and incident CVD by using linear and logistic regressions. After adjustment for baseline RFs, the links between baseline history of PL and incident CVD were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. PL was reported in 35% of women (n=79,121). Higher BMI, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and lower income, physical activity, poorer diet, smoking and alcohol use, were are reported in association with a history of PL. A significant association of PL with incident CVD was observed over mean follow up of 16 years, after adjustment for CVD RFs. The link between several CVD RFs and PL did not entirely account for the link between PL and incident CVD.
