The distribution and prevalence of human papillomavirus in women in mainland China

Cancer Feb 19, 2019

Li K, et al. - Researchers intended to offer a general profile for the application and subsequent efficacy assessment of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in mainland Chinese women, by analyzing the epidemiology of high-risk HPV infections in this population via a systematic review. They searched PubMed, Web of Science, Medline (Ovid), China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases and identified 198 epidemiological studies reporting high-risk HPVs in mainland Chinese women. Studies published from January 2000 to June 2018 were included. Findings of the meta-analysis revealed a 19.0% overall infection rate of high-risk HPVs. The highest infection rates were noted for subtypes 16, 52, 58, 53, and 18. The estimated overall infection rates of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia I (CINI), CINII+, and cervical cancer patients were 59.6%, 84.8%, and 89.9%, respectively. In the studied population, the epidemiology of high-risk HPVs was basically in line with that observed for the rest of the world. The major prevalent high-risk HPV subtypes in China could be covered by HPV vaccines currently licensed in China.
