Long-term survival following multivessel revascularization in patients with diabetes: The FREEDOM Follow-On study
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Feb 17, 2019
Farkouh ME, et al. - Researchers assessed the long-term survival of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and multivessel coronary disease (MVD) undergoing coronary revascularization in the FREEDOM trial, which found that coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was better than percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents (PCI-DES) in lowering the rate of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events after a median follow-up of 3.8 years in these patients. The ultimate goal was to investigate if CABG conferred a survival benefit after an extended follow-up period. A total of 943 patients (49.6% of the original cohort) with a median follow-up of 7.5 years (range 0 to 13.2 years) at 25 centers were included. Findings revealed lower all-cause mortality in association with coronary revascularization with CABG vs with PCI-DES during long-term follow-up of patients with DM and MVD.
