Anthropometric characteristics, physical activity, and risk of hematological malignancies: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

Psaltopoulou T, et al. – In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers evaluated the associations between overweight/obesity, adult attained height, and physical activity with hematological cancer risk in adults. They separately evaluated non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and its subtypes (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma [DLBCL], follicular cell lymphoma, small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia [SLL/CLL]), HL, multiple myeloma (MM), and leukemia and subtypes (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia [AML]). They noted an association of obesity with a greater risk of NHL, HL, MM, leukemia overall, and AML in both sexes, as well as with higher DLBCL risk in females. An increased risk of NHL was noted among taller males whereas a higher risk of NHL, DLBCL, FL, CLL/SLL, MM, leukemia, and AML was evident among women. No relation of physical activity and abdominal fatness was found with hematological malignancies risk.
