Pettersen PS, et al. - In the Nor-Hand study, researchers analyzed the association of peripheral and central sensitization with self-reported hand pain among 282 participants. They noticed that candidates with the lowest pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in their finger joints and most remote locations had higher pain on Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) vs those with the highest PPTs after adjustments for demographics, psychosocial factors, and radiographic severity. Central sensitization was commonly observed in persons with hand OA. They suggested sensitization could be a possible treatment target.
