Olfson M, et al. - From February 2018 to April 2018, authors analyzed data from 139,862 adult with and without serious psychological distress to characterize national trends in severe psychological distress and patterns in the utility of outpatient mental health service (OMHS). They found a decline in serious psychological distress from 4.82% (2004-2005) to 3.71% (2014-2015). They also noted an increase in the percentage of adults receiving any OMHS: 19.08% during 2004-2005 to 23.00% during 2014-2015. Overall, the increase in OMHS used occurred during a period of decline in psychological distress, and adults with less severe psychological distressed comprised most of the absolute increase in OMHS use; adults with greater psychological distress severity experienced a greater relative increase in OMHS use.
