Safety and efficacy of methotrexate for chinese adults with psoriasis with and without psoriatic arthritis

JAMA Dermatology Feb 02, 2019

Yan K, et al. - In this Chinese cohort study, researchers evaluated 107 patients with psoriasis without arthritis and 128 with psoriasis plus psoriatic arthritis to assess the efficacy and safety of methotrexate in this population. They noted that 90% reduction from baseline Psoriasis Area Severity Index response was significantly lower in candidates with psoriatic arthritis vs those without psoriatic arthritis at weeks 8 and 12. They also recorded a higher incidence of adverse events like dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, and hepatoxicity among patients with psoriatic arthritis. They found an association of methotrexate-induced elevation of alanine aminotransferase levels with body mass index and smoking. Overall, they concluded methotrexate to be a well-tolerated and efficient first-line treatment for psoriasis without arthritis.
