Outcomes of minority patients with very severe hypertension (>220/>120 mmHg)
Journal of Hypertension Jan 20, 2019
Preston R, et al. - Given the common occurrence of acute severe hypertension in inner-city ethnic minority populations, researchers determined the effects of currently employed treatment regimens on blood pressure in a clinical practice setting. This retrospective cohort investigation included 156 consecutive patients with SBP levels of at least 220 mmHg and/or DBP levels of at least 120 mmHg during 3-month enrollment in 2014, with 2-year follow-up. They encountered unpredictable and potentially dangerous responses in SBP in relation to the acute treatment of severe hypertension. During the 2-year follow-up, they observed extraordinary rates of recurrent visits, target organ events, and hospitalizations. These findings highlight a necessity for developing effective management strategies to lower blood pressure safely and to prevent long-term consequences.
