Association between cardiorespiratory fitness and risk of type 2 diabetes: A meta-analysis

Obesity Jan 18, 2019

Qiu S, et al. - In this meta-analysis, researchers quantified the association of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with type 2 diabetes risk in the general population and statin users, and examined the joint effects of CRF and fatness with type 2 diabetes risk. Eligible cohort studies reporting on the association of CRF with type 2 diabetes risk were identified via database search. Using random-effects models, summary hazard HRs were obtained. For every 1-metabolic equivalent increase in CRF, HRs of type 2 diabetes were 0.90 for the general population and 0.92 for statin users, and the HRs were linearly shaped. An inverse and dose-dependent association was found between CRF and type 2 diabetes risk. According to findings, high CRF may eliminate the diabetogenic effect from statins, but a reduced body weight index appears to be superior in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
