Roubinian NH, et al. - Decreased red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and short-term tolerance of in-hospital anemia are supported by the findings in randomized clinical trials, so researchers investigated the prevalence of anemia at and after hospital discharge and related morbidity and mortality events and the long-term outcomes related to changes in transfusion practice in this retrospective cohort study. With decreased RBC transfusion, they noted a corresponding increase in anemia after hospitalization. However, this increase was not accompanied by a rise in subsequent RBC use, rehospitalization, or mortality within 6 months of hospital discharge. As per longitudinal analyses, practice recommendations to limit RBC transfusion and tolerate anemia during and after hospitalization are safe.
