Clinical outcomes in patients with biopsy-proved diabetic nephropathy compared to isolated lupus or crescentic glomerulonephritis
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jan 17, 2019
Chou YH, et al. - In this retrospective observational study, researchers reported the outcome of biopsy-proved diabetic nephropathy (DMN) patients vs patients with isolated crescentic glomerulonephritis (GN) or lupus nephritis (LN). Study participants included patients with 55 DMN, crescentic 48 GN and 82 LN from an original cohort of 987 adult patients who underwent kidney biopsy. Investigators used the Cox regression model to identify factors related to the outcome measures of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and all-cause mortality. According to findings, there was a greater risk of ESRD than LN counterparts in patients with biopsy-proven DMN, but not crescentic GN. In view of the serious renal prognosis of DMN, more thorough monitoring is essential to ensure that best therapeutic strategies are used to prevent progression to ESRD. Multivariate analysis revealed old age (≧ 65 years) and lower serum albumin levels were independently linked to overall death.
