Adipose insulin resistance in normal-weight polycystic ovary syndrome women

Dumesic DA, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers ascertained if adipose insulin resistance (adipose-IR) and subcutaneous (SC) abdominal adipose stem cell (ASC) gene expression are altered in normal-weight polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women and associated with hyperandrogenemia and/or insulin resistance. Study participants included 10 normal-weight PCOS women and 18 age- and body mass index-balanced controls. Findings suggested that adipose-IR correlated positively with serum androgen and fasting log triglyceride (TG) levels, percent small adipocytes and acute insulin response to glucose and negatively related to insulin sensitivity (Si) and serum adiponectin levels. According to the outcomes, normal-weight PCOS women have increased adipose IR and altered the expression of the ASC gene that is linked to both hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance.
