Prognostic role of p16 in nonoropharyngeal head and neck cancer

Journal of the National Cancer Institute Jan 17, 2019

Bryant AK, et al. - Using the US Veterans Affairs database, investigators examined 1448 subjects to analyze the prognostic role of p16 in nonoropharyngeal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) (treated with surgery, radiotherapy, or chemoradiotherapy) between 2005 and 2015. They assessed tumor p16 status of primary tumor specimens of oropharyngeal or nonoropharyngeal (hypopharyngeal, laryngeal, or oral cavity) tumor sites from tumor registry data and then, reviewed pathology reports manually. They observed that cases with p16-positive tumors had increased overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and competing mortality (CM) in multivariable models adjusting for treatment, stage, age, comorbidity, and body mass index.
