McCuaig JM, et al. - In a parallel, two-armed, randomized non-inferiority study, researchers evaluated a modified pre-test genetic counseling (GC) model for women undergoing panel-based genetic testing for ovarian cancer susceptibility. They compared the model to the traditional pre-test GC model prior to panel-based genetic testing. Pre-test GC was completed by 382 women (256 modified, 126 traditional). Compared to traditional pre-test GC, time spent with a genetic counselor was shorter in the modified pre-test GC. They identified modified pre-test GC as non-inferior to traditional GC on psychosocial outcomes, ovarian cancer knowledge and satisfaction. This suggests that for individuals undergoing panel testing, the modified pre-test GC model is an efficient and efficacious alternative.
