Yu Y, et al. - In the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial, researchers evaluated 20,702 hypertensive individuals to assess the influence of plasma retinol on the risk of the first stroke and the potential effect modifiers. Study participants were randomized to double-blind, daily treatment with either 10-mg enalapril and 0.8-mg folic acid or 10-mg enalapril alone; median treatment duration was 4.5 years. The investigators observed a decline in the risk of first stroke and first ischemic stroke when retinol was implemented. They also noted a stronger inverse relation between plasma retinol and first stroke in individuals with baseline total homocysteine. They found no significant impacts of plasma retinol on first hemorrhagic stroke.
