Time from neuraxial anesthesia placement to delivery is inversely proportional to umbilical arterial cord pH at scheduled cesarean delivery

Rimsza RR, et al. – Via conducting this retrospective cohort study involving cesarean deliveries between September 2014 and February 2017, researchers investigated neonatal umbilical arterial pH according to pre-delivery time intervals at scheduled term cesarean. This study included 527 participants with a median umbilical arterial pH of 7.27 and a body mass index of 35 kg/m2. The investigators noted an association of longer spinal to delivery and uterine incision to delivery time intervals with decreasing umbilical arterial pH at scheduled term cesarean delivery. They recommend undertaking efforts to minimize pre-delivery time following spinal placement to reduce the frequency of unanticipated neonatal acidemia.
