Matsuki T, et al. - In this study, authors assessed 120 subjects with tumors in the parapharyngeal space to study the role of classifying tumor localization by imaging diagnosis and preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology. They observed the location of tumors in the prestyloid and retrostyloid compartments in 68 and 52 subjects, respectively. Most of the tumors diagnosed histopathologically in the prestyloid and retrostyloid compartments were pleomorphic adenoma and schwannoma, respectively. The preoperative cytological diagnostic rate for benign or malignant tumor was recorded at 95.2% with all malignant tumors in the prestyloid compartment. They concluded an improvement in the accuracy of presumptive diagnosis with the classification of preoperative tumors.
