Association between epilepsy and risk of sexual dysfunction: A meta-analysis

Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy Jan 14, 2019

Zhao S, et al. - Researchers analyzed evidence from pertinent studies identified from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library database that focused on the association of epilepsy with sexual dysfunction (SD) and quantified this relationship. This meta-analysis included nine eligible studies (three cross-sectional, five case-control, and one cohort), with a total of 1,556 individuals and 599 cases of epilepsy. As per synthetic results, an increased risk of female SD as well as male SD was observed in association with epilepsy. The investigators noted MODERATE quality of evidence across outcomes. The GRADE-profiler demonstrated that the rate of events of SD on average in the patients with epilepsy and the controls were 383/659 (58.1%) and 168/1017 (16.5%), respectively. Overall, a significant association of epilepsy with an increased risk of SD was observed in both sexes, suggesting a potential hazardous effect of epilepsy on sexual functioning.
