Association of statin therapy with prevention of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy

JAMA Ophthalmology Jan 15, 2019

Kang EYC, et al. - In this population-based cohort study involving 37,894 Taiwanese patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia, researchers examined the link between statin therapy and the development of diabetic retinopathy. The statin group included 18,947 patients and the non-statin group included 18,947 patients. Mean follow-up of 7.6 years and 7.3 years, respectively, were performed. In this patient population, a decreased risk of diabetic retinopathy as well as lower rates of interventions for vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were observed in association with statin therapy. Also, lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular events, new-onset diabetic neuropathy, and new-onset diabetic foot ulcers were noted in those who received statin therapy.
