Younossi ZM, et al. - In patients with non-alcoholic and alcohol-related fatty liver disease, researchers evaluated the impact of alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome on mortality. Via a search of the National Health and Nutrition and Examination Survey III, the investigators identified 4,264 adults (aged 20-74 years) with hepatic steatosis for whom mortality and follow-up data were available and were, thus, included in the study. They noted that alcohol consumption was associated with increased mortality in patients with fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. Overall, there was an overlap between non-alcoholic and alcohol-related fatty liver disease.
