Soriano LC, et al. – In this study, researchers projected incidence rates of upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB and LGIB) in a large cohort of new users of low-dose aspirin in the United Kingdom, with subanalyses of hospitalization status and fatalities. Low-dose aspirin users had 1,115 UGIB events and 1,936 LGIB events. The investigators observed that most patients with UGIB events (58.9%) were hospitalized. On the other hand, most patients with LGIB events were referred to secondary care (72.8%). LGIB patients had higher hospitalization or death rates in 30 days vs UGIB patients. Incidence rates per 1,000 person-years were 0.67 for UGIB and 0.76 for LGIB among nonusers of low-dose aspirin. For cardiovascular and colorectal cancer prevention, these estimates may be valuable for benefit–risk assessments of low-dose aspirin.
