Good outcome after elbow hemiarthroplasty in active patients with an acute intra-articular distal humeral fracture
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Jan 13, 2019
Al-Hamdani A, et al. - Researchers assessed 24 subjects to analyze the clinical consequences and complexities after elbow hemiarthroplasty (EHA) for acute distal humeral fractures Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO)/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) type C2 and C3. They measured the median Oxford Elbow Score ranging from 17 to 48 points and obtained “good to excellent results” in 21 cases, “fair” in 2, and “poor” in 1 subject. They recorded 110° of median flexion/extension arcs and 160° of supination/pronation arcs. They estimated pain with a median pain severity score ranging from 0-7, where 0 represented a pain-free elbow. They noted complications in 7 cases and 3 of them were reoperated due to stiffness. Overall, they concluded EHA, a stable choice in the treatment of an acute intra-articular distal humeral fracture unfit for open reduction and internal fixation, particularly in active individuals.
