Chen-Xu M, et al. - Using data from the 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers assessed 5,467 US candidates to study the existing prevalence and decadal trends of gout and hyperuricemia (a serum urate level > 7.0 mg/dL in men and >5.7 mg/dL in women) with the predominance of urate-lowering therapy (ULT) use among individuals with gout. They note a 3.9% prevalence of gout among US adults in 2015-2016. They also noted mean serum urate levels of 6.0 mg/dL in males while 4.8 mg/dL in females, with hyperuricemia prevalences of 20.2% and 20.0% among both sexes, respectively. Stability in the prevalences of gout and hyperuricemia was observed over the past decade. They noted that only one-third of individuals with gout were undergoing ULT, even after this substantial stability in the past decade.
