Falls among older adults with sarcopenia dwelling in nursing home or community: A meta-analysis
Clinical Nutrition Jan 11, 2019
Zhang X, et al. - Among older adults residing in a nursing home or community, researchers evaluated and quantified sarcopenia as a risk of falling. Through a systematic literature search of Medline (via Ovid), PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane CENTRAL Library from the beginning of the database until October 15, 2018, prospective cohort studies assessing the relationship between sarcopenia and falls in older adults were identified. A total of 10 relevant studies involving 10,073 participants met inclusion criteria. The investigators found that sarcopenia was significantly associated with an increased risk of fall in older adults vs those without sarcopenia. The results of a subgroup analysis also showed that male sarcopenia participants were more likely to fall than mixed gender sarcopenia participants. According to this systematic review and meta-analysis, sarcopenia is not a risk factor for falls among older people living in nursing homes, but among older community-dwelling individuals.
