Leeds IL, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective observational study, to determine the association of preoperative psychosocial risk factors and 30-day complications after cancer surgery. Structured interviews using well-established screening forms were conducted to ascertain psychosocial risks among elective gastrointestinal cancer surgery patients. The postoperative course was then collected via chart review. Medically comorbid patients with multiple psychosocial risks demonstrated a greater than threefold chance of complication, supporting the use of psychosocial risks in preoperative assessment; including them in preoperative optimization efforts should also be considered.
