Fundus autofluorescence and spectral domain optical coherence tomography as predictors for long-term functional outcome in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Jan 11, 2019

Poulsen CD, et al. - Researchers estimated 84 subjects to recognize the pre- and postoperative retinal alterations in fundus autofluorescence (AF) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and also to analyze its correlation with functional consequences in primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) cases. They assessed the candidates with ultrawide-field AF images (UWFI) (Optos 200Tx) and SD-OCT (Topcon 3D OCT-2000) imaging preoperatively and after 6 and 30 months. Fundus AF and SD-OCT were found capable to distinguish retinal reestablishment up to 30 months after primary RRD. They noticed an association of preoperative findings like macular attachment, detachment > 750 μm from foveola, lack of intraretinal separation, and subfoveal elevation ≤ 500 μm with better BCVA at months 6 and 30.
