Mohs micrographic surgery vs wide local excision for melanoma in situ: Analysis of a nationwide database

International Journal of Dermatology Jan 09, 2019

Phan K, et al. - Authors retrospectively assessed 24,515 candidates with wide local excision (WLE) and 4,122 subjects with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for melanoma in situ (MIS) or cutaneous melanoma to examine the rate of survival after both surgeries. They observed a higher proportion of patients aged ≥75 years in the MMS group vs the WLE group (23.3% vs 15.3%) with a greater number of females for WLE. They recorded more incidences of scalp/neck tumors and facial MIS tumors in MMS but no significant differences were observed related to cancer-specific survival and overall survival among the two groups.
