Predictors of suicidal ideation among IBD outpatients

Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Jan 08, 2019

Hashash JG, et al. – In this prospective observational study, researchers determined suicidal ideation (SI) rates and evaluated predictors of SI among consecutive adult inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) outpatients over 18 months. Among 1,352 consecutive IBD outpatients, 71 had SI. The investigators noted significant correlations between SI and depression severity, tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), IBD-related quality of life, and low vitamin D levels. As per multivariate regression, depression severity and TCA use have unique contributions. Identification of the subset of IBD patients most vulnerable to SI may assist proper referrals to behavioral services and prevent progression to completed suicides.
