Comparison of outcomes in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer treated with radical cystectomy vs bladder preservation

American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jan 07, 2019

Zhong J, et al. – In this study involving 8,454 participants (2004-2013), researchers assessed the consequences in individuals with muscle-invasive bladder cancer and treated with radical cystectomy and bladder preservation individually. Candidates undergoing bladder-preserving chemoradiation (BPCRT) were significantly older and with higher Charlson-Deyo comorbidity scores. They observed a decline in the hazard ratio of surgery vs BPCRT by a factor of 0.85 per year. They noted no significant variation in the survival between the two cohorts and described similar survival outcomes with bladder preservation when study participants were selected properly.
